You’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen. If you’re like most people, you start on Pinterest. You pin fifty images, trying to pinpoint exactly what you love. Then you head to Google to track down the items. (Trust me, even as a designer, I do this—and I almost always accidentally pick the most expensive things first. Bummer!)
Next comes the reality check: the budget.
When my husband and I planned our own remodel, we had to create two distinct numbers: the “What We Can Safely Afford” budget (the needs) and the “If We Decide to Splurge” budget (the wants). Once we aligned on the final number, the real planning began.
The Big Mistake: Calling the Contractor First
Most homeowners assume their next step is to call a contractor. But wait! You need to call your interior designer first.
Before a hammer ever hits a wall, you need a buildable layout. How are you actually going to use the space? Because I am the primary cook in our house, I meticulously planned our drawers, cabinets with custom millwork, and storage to be within the shortest walking distance between the three vital zones: the wash zone, the cooking zone, and the prep zone. But we also had to plan for transit. Like most families, everyone naturally gathers in our kitchen, so we needed enough clearance for people to maneuver without tripping over the chef.
Once that layout is set in stone, then you bring in the contractors to bid. They can give you an accurate price because they aren’t guessing—they are looking at a real plan.
