Breaking Through the Concrete Jungle: The Power of Biophilic Design

Authored by Saskia

I was up in LA recently, and after spending hours trapped on the freeways, it hit me just how little greenery there is in some parts of our cities. Don’t get me wrong, I love skyscrapers and bold architecture, but the severe lack of beautiful green parks—especially in low-income neighborhoods- is truly a disservice to the community.

It made us think about sharing our thoughts in this blog: how do you break through the concrete jungle when you get home? You embrace biophilic design.

We need plants, and plants need us. It is a beautiful, scientifically proven symbiotic relationship: we breathe in the oxygen they create, and they thrive on the carbon dioxide we exhale.

But what exactly is biophilic design? Derived from the Greek concept meaning “the love of living things,” it’s the practice of intentionally connecting our indoor environments to the natural world. It’s about bringing the restorative power of the outdoors in. Think of biophilic design as the conscious use of real wood, living plants, maximized natural light, and organic materials like wool, cotton, and linen that leave a smaller carbon footprint on our planet. After all, if we were to ever leave this earth, the plants would immediately find a way to reclaim the concrete boxes we choose to live in!

You already know what this feels like intuitively. Think of that exact sensation you get when walking through the lush, misty fern forest at the San Diego Zoo. As soon as you step into it, you instantly feel cooler. You breathe deeply. You are surrounded by every vibrant shade of green imaginable, while shade flowers like orchids and bromeliads flourish around you. The trickling sound of water instantly lowers your heart rate, and a deep calmness overtakes you. It’s quite magical.

You can recreate that exact, stress-reducing magic right inside your own home by using a local San Diego interior designer, who can help transform your living space into your ultimate sanctuary.

How do we do this?

How a Designer Brings the Outdoors In

Recreating this feeling takes more than just a quick trip to the nursery for a few houseplants. To truly change the energy of a room, a designer looks at the bones of the space. Here is how we intentionally engineer a calm, biophilic environment for our clients:

1. Maximizing Daylight & Framing the View

The first thing we evaluate is sightlines and windows. We look at how to frame your exterior views so that your garden, trees, or the sky become the actual artwork on your walls. We can often use sheer, organic linen window treatments that soften harsh glare but allow natural light to track across the room throughout the day, anchoring your body’s natural circadian rhythm.

2. Specifying “Alive” Materials

In a biophilic space, synthetics and plastics are out. We source tactile, natural materials that patina beautifully over time and literally feel grounding to touch. Think custom white oak or walnut built-ins, unlacquered brass hardware that ages gracefully, organic jute or wool rugs underfoot, and rich linen or cotton upholstery.

3. Designing for the Senses

True biophilic design is multi-sensory. We often incorporate custom indoor water features—like a subtle, integrated slate waterfall wall—to mask city traffic noise with the restorative sound of trickling water. We also look at lighting design that mimics nature; instead of static, harsh overhead lights, we install layered, dimmable fixtures that can replicate the dappled, moving light of a forest canopy or a soft sunset.

4. Curating Strategic Greenery

Instead of cluttering a room with random small pots that create visual noise, we use a curated approach. We select architectural, statement plants—like a dramatic Bird of Paradise, a structural Fiddle Leaf Fig, or lush, cascading pothos installations—and place them in custom-designed planters that match the scale and aesthetic of your furniture.
